Ali had bought herself a new outfit for the Christmas party. Trying to assess herself in the tall mirrors of the staff bathroom, she stood on her tiptoes. She almost looked festive. When she’d gone shopping, she’d tried to get away with a black sweater, but the saleswoman had insisted she try on a red one.

Ali had to admit, it did fit her perfectly. She’d compromised with a rope of shiny grey pearls which adorned her neck, and decided on a pair of slim, black dress pants. They came to a few inches above her ankle, allowing a small peek of skin. Her silky, black heels completed the outfit. She wanted to look festive, a little bit sexy, yet proper for a party that involved children. She thought she’d pulled off the look.

Kiara strolled in as Ali stood back on her tiptoes, desperately trying to make certain she was completely put together.

“Would you like me to pick you up, munchkin?” Kiara asked as she went and stood before the mirror.

“Ha ha,” Ali said, but couldn’t help but smile. “What are you wearing?” She was a bit concerned that Kiara wasn’t aware of how most everything she wore was considered sexy by everyday standards.

Kiara took to wiping off her makeup, glancing quickly at Ali in the mirror. “A sweater and leggings.”

Ali was silent.

“I know how to dress down,” said Kiara. “But I don’t understand how it’s my fault I was built with curves.”

Ali shrugged. “Then it’s not my fault I enjoy boring things like gardening.”

Kiara’s eyes lit up in amusement and she went back to removing her makeup.

Ali realized that her friend’s skin was pristine underneath all the cosmetics and almost looked prettier with her face wiped clean. Kiara took out a dark red lipstick, but Ali stopped her.

“Wait,” she said. She shuffled through her own makeup bag as Kiara turned to stare at her. “Try this instead.” She handed the makeup stick to Kiara, who just looked down at it in fright.

“It’s just a pale gloss,” Kiara said.

“It has a slight tint. It’s pretty.”

“But it’s not….”

“Just try it,” Ali suggested. “If you don’t like it, wipe it off and put on your red lipstick.”

Kiara chuckled. “I like it you when you’re fierce.” She opened the tube and leaned toward the mirror, and with one last uncertain glance at Ali in the mirror, she applied it to her lips. She didn’t move. Then she cocked her head at her own reflection. “It’s….”

“Really pretty on you,” said Ali.

The gloss accentuated the pale brown of Kiara’s full lips, the shininess of the gloss making her pout even more pronounced.

Kiara stood back, then without a word, she went to work on her eye makeup smearing a pale cream across her lids before spending a few moments accentuating her eyelashes with mascara. She applied bronzer to her cheeks that gave her dark cheekbones a beautiful shimmer, and then she stood back from the mirror, scrutinizing herself.

Ali opened her mouth to speak, but Kiara turned, rummaging in her bag.
